Six Common Causes of Sump Pump Malfunctions

Sump pumps are generally reliable, but that doesn’t mean they can’t suffer malfunctions that impede their operation. With proper care and maintenance, you can expect most sump pumps to provide 7-10 years of reliable protection.

Some of the most common causes of sump pump failures our expert plumbers encounter include:

  1. Motor failure: Failed motor bearings, broken impellers, and cracks in the case may require replacing the sump pump. Whenever possible, we’ll repair significant issues but will recommend replacement when a repair will not reliably restore the pump’s performance.
  2. Valve failure: The check valve prevents water from flowing back into the sump pit; if this fails, the water will increase the cycle frequency and cause the pump to fail.
  3. Switch failure: This is the most common cause of failures. A defective switch can cause the pump to run continuously or fail to initiate.
  4. Sticking float: The float ensures the proper operation of the on/off switch. If debris gets stuck between the float and the side of the sump, it can impede the pump’s operation.
  5. Loss of power: Power failure can occur due to tripped circuit breakers, damaged wiring, faulty generators, etc.
  6. Damaged discharge pipe: The discharge pipe can leak, crack, or suffer breaks that impede the smooth and efficient flow of water from the sump pit and out into the main water line.

5 Steps to Take When Your Sump Pump Fails

When your sump pump malfunctions or fails, prompt action is essential. The sooner you act, the more likely you are to protect sensitive electronics, valuables, and your home from damage.

  1. Unplug Electronics & Check the Power Source

One of the first things you should do is to immediately shut off all breakers to your basement or crawl space. This will stop the flow of electricity into the affected area. You will also want to remove any electronics, including televisions, computers, home theater systems, lamps, etc., from the area.

  1. Remove Valuable Items from the Area

When your system fails, immediately remove any valuable items from the area. This includes any electronics, furniture, artwork, collectibles, etc. that could come into contact with moisture as the water level rises.

  1. Remove and Clean the Sump Pump

Take the sump pump out of the sump pit and clean it. Return the pump to the pit and restart it to see if this restores the pump to operation. This can dislodge and remove any debris impeding the operation of the pump.

  1. Inspect the Float & the Float Switch, Check for Leaks or Damage

Check to see if the float switch is sticking or binding. This can occur due to sediment buildup, component failure, or poor installation. A functional float switch should move freely and activate the pump when there is water within the sump pit.

  1. Call a Professional Plumber

When your sump pump fails, it’s essential to hire a professional plumber to inspect the unit and perform the necessary repairs. This will help protect you from injury and ensure the repairs are done to the highest quality standard and in a manner that won’t negatively affect existing warranty coverage or your homeowner’s insurance policy.
